Mrs. Rowe, known fondly as "the Pie Lady" by many of her customers, was the quintessential purveyor of comfort food. Now her family carries on her legacy at her 60-year-old, all-American roadside café in Staunton, Virginia, as well as at the new country buffet, catering business, four cafeterias, and a bustling take-out counter that sells 100 pies a day. With Southern classics like Key Lime and Pecan Fudge and restaurant favorites like Peanut Butter Custard and Strawberry Sour Cream, along with a variety of crusts and toppings, this little slice of Southern hospitality will satisfy every type of sweet tooth, while convincing even city slickers to take the time to smell the French Apple Pie.

When I first opened Mrs. Rowe's Little Book of Southern Pies I sat right down and read it straight through. It's THAT kind of cookbook. I bake pie frequently and I reach for this book again and again. I have a fondness for Southern pies and the recipes included are pitch-perfect for pie lovers. Today I'm using the fresh peach pie recipe [...] I treasure my copy and have bought others as gifts for the other pie enthusiasts in my life.
Love this cookbook and Mrs Rowe's Pies. Have dined many times at the restaurant in Stanton and make a point to stop whenever we are passing. My wife and I love her pies.
Great cookbook. Enjoyed the recipes as did my family. Nothing can beat homemade pie to end a great meal.
Let me start by saying I can cook and bake very well, this is not bragging this is simple fact. I can whip a meringue by hand within a few minutes no problem, but with this book I had nothing but problems. Let's start with the crust, I could not get it to hold together no matter what I tried it just didn't work. I ended up freezing the pie dough and grating it into the pie plate and then pressing it together with my fingers. Which seemed senseless to me why should I have bought a book specifically about pies if the crust recipe won't even work? I have tried alot of pie crust recipes and this one is the worst. I tried not to let that influence me and thought maybe the fillings will be better. Boy was I wrong. As for the pie fillings themselves, they all seemed to be off just slightly the chocolate pie was a little too thin, the shoofly pie filling was watery etc. etc. I was at this point desperate, please let the meringue at least be good so I don't feel like I wasted my money! It wasn't. As I said before I am no stranger to meringue and I thought wow weepless meringue that would be great I won't have to worry about that awful watery layer on my pie filling. It started to look promising, the whites turning into puffy white clouds is always a good sight but as soon as I added the cornstarch mixture (that's what keeps it weepless) the egg whites fell, I thought I had done something wrong so I tried it again and same results. These recipes may be Mrs. Rowes but I feel like they have been tweaked until they no longer work. Save your money and buy a more worthwhile cookbook, try The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook Collection I've never had a problem with any of Paula Deen's recipes and the one for pie crusts is fantastic.
We love pie in my family. My mother-in-law makes the best pies and I wanted to find a book that has some great pie recipes so I could make one to impress her. I have a couple of pie cookbooks but I have to say this one is it. I just love the pictures it has. The recipes look amazing and it even has one for crust. I just received this book so I look forward to making a couple of pies for the coming holiday cookout...mmmm!
