It's a good product compare to the price that I paid for. Few problems like the remote is extremely slow which is really annoying. Take a long time to read the content of the USB drive, specially if you've a high capacity one. Some of the files need to go through their converter software even they worked fine with PC.
The demo files came with the CD have mpg4 fils for videos. My camera, PowerShot A630, generates AVI files for video, which is supported file format according to product description. However, the screen often goes blank or black when trying to play these AVI files. I had to unplug the power, and plug in again in order to reset the unit. Then, it will play the AVI video clips fine for a while. It seemed that if it is in continue play mode from a reboot (power-off then power on), the clips can be played one after another fine. As soon as I want to manually select one video to play, nothing gets displayed even the bottom of the screen says the clip is being played.
The JPG files were stunningly beautiful on my 1080p TV with the devise. All demo files played fine too. However, there are no AVI file in demo files. I am planning to return the unit as the whole purpose of buying this was to be able to play the videos captured by my camera straight onto my TV without converting or reformatting to another format.
Only negative I have found is the way in which you must search for your files.
If you have a lot of files on a hard drive hooked up to this unit, it is difficult finding a particular file. If all were displayed at once there would be no problem but you must click through many tabs before finding your file.
Over all its worth the price since I no longer need to burn all my media onto disks to hear or view them now which saves a bundle of money in the long run.
It's my second media player, the first one I used was Phillips DVP6982, Both are USB and HD 1080p compatible. WD is supporting any codecs excluding RMVB (*.mkv, x264 and H264 are working perfectly). Browsing through folders is seamless, forwarding and rewinding at x16 +extra 10 minutes is satisfactory. The current firmware supports many languages (including easteuropean, which were not supported by the earlier ver.)for subtitles. One hindrance is the lack of support for the .txt files, but it is quite easy to resolve this problem by using programs like SRT though(export to *.SRT). Another hindrance is the lack of decoding DTS - If your amplifier has the DTS decoder and optic input you can decode directly. The current version stops the hard drives rotation in the standby mode. Two USB drives connected to the WD are working great. Bottom Line: I recommend this product, it's worth the money.
I purchased this as a gift for my father. Shipping time for this product was very fast and prompt. Arrived nicely packaged and well secured. The Media player was very easy to setup using the composite cables included. I inserted my external hard drive which I had placed some movies for testing. I was amazed with the results. The media player has a HD conversion feature that turned my AVI, XVID and other compressed movies which looked a little pixelated when viewed in fullscreen mode on my computer (with a 24" HD-LCD)into almost DVD quality on a regular CRT TV. I then tested on a 48" Plasma TV, followed by a 50" LCD TV with the same results. A much improved almost DVD quality image output. The sound quality was also much louder coming from the media player that when viewing the same movie on my computer.
This is a must have to anyone that is tired of backing up their movies onto DVD's or want something portable that can be easily transported from one room to another or bringing over to a friend or families home. Setup takes only 2-5 minutes (taking out of the box, plugging in the audio/video cables or even an HDMI cable and then plugging in the external hard drive and finally the power cord to a wall socket. It can't be any more simpler. I plan to buy one for myself and the rest of my family. This is a must have to all that are tired of burning movies to DVD.
